THE MICHIGAN JERSEY FUTURITY -- A STATE FAIR TRADITION
For over twenty five year, the highlight of the State Fair Jersey show was the Three Year Old Futurity.
This Jersey Futurity is now held at MSU during Ag Expo and is the highlight of the All Michigan Jersey Show.
The MJCC sponsors the Futurity as a test of the confidence Jersey breeders have in their ability to select and raise heifers that will offer outstanding type and dairy potential by their third year.
Registered Jersey heifers selected by their owners are entered into the Futurity by a periodic payment into the Futurity Fund, which is invested so as to provide cash prize awards on a sliding scale to the cows that are shown at State Fair (Now the All Michigan Show held during Ag Expo in July )in the Futurity class (these will also qualify as regular exhibits in the Junior Three and Senior Three Year Old cow classes).
The animal, her breeder, her owner/exhibitor, and her leadsperson are all introduced during the pageantry of the Futurity. It is the highlight of the show day, in the opinion of those who came to Michigan State Fair and now the All Michigan Show each year to watch the cattle shows.
Since there hasn't been a Michigan State Fair since 2009 the event is now held at the MSU Pavilion during the annual Dairy Expo during July. It is part of the All Michigan Jersey Show. This year it will be on Saturday, July 26th, Seventy seven animals were nominated in 2010 for a chance to win the 2011 Futurity. Ninety Registered Jersey cows were nominated in 2010 for a chance to win the 2012 Futurity.
