I Remember When the first Jersey Journal was published in February 1947, as the Calhoun County Jersey Journal.
It was edited by Claude (Corky) Stout the father of Richard (Dee Stout. Dee Stout was a long time officer of the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club, serving as President and Secretary-Treasure. At the annual Michigan Jersey Cattle Club meeting in January 1947 a great push was made to make Michigan Jerseys better known through out Michigan and the Nation. It was decided to publish a magazine called the Michigan Jersey Journal. The first issue was mailed to over 1000 Jersey Breeders.
In 1951 we started publishing a joint issue with Indiana. Robert Hatfield of Remus Michigan and Alpha Gilmore of Jerrersonville Indiana were the editors. At the end of this joint venture the American Jersey Cattle Club came to us asking permission to use the name Jersey Journal for their soon to be publication. Permission was granted for the name to be used for the new national magazine. Previously a magazine known as the Jersey Bulletin was a privately owned national publication, the AJCC wanted to print their own and call it the Jersey Journal.
From 1954-56 the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club Secretary sent out newsletters regularly. In 1957 a quartly publication was once again started. It was called the Michigan Jersey News. Evelyn shepard was editor at that time. In the early 1960's Jac Cooper was the editor. Yours truly(Blanche Piepkow) took over in 1962 as editor until 1971. Judy Conn took over the helm from 1971 until 1980. In 1980 Lynn Janes rodgers took over. After Lynn you all probably know better than I the status of the news.
However, I know as a former editor it is very important for the Jersey Breeders to support your paper by getting ads in and on time. Also in sending in reports and news.
